DJI Reveals Two New Drones and a Unique Sphere Photography Mode

DJI, the world’s largest drone manufacturer and one of the most prolific innovators, has recently announced the launch of two brand new drones, as well as a new photography mode that aims to make aerial shooting more fun for anybody who uses a DJI Spark device.

Introducing the Mavic Pro Platinum

The Mavic Pro is one of the most popular drones from DJI, and it offers battery life that is far more impressive than many of its competitors. DJI are not content to rest with their current devices, and that is evident with the announcement of the Mavic Pro Platinum.

The new Mavic Pro Platinum was revealed at the IFA convention in Berlin, and initial data shows that it will offer up to 11% more battery life than the standard Mavic Pro. This should take the drone from 27 minutes up to 30 minutes of operational flight time.

Although this might not seem like a significant improvement, it’s important to keep things in perspective. Many of the competitors for the Mavic line of drones are only capable of flight time of 20 minutes. Any extra minutes that can be squeezed out of the new design will be appreciated by users, and the increase in battery life with the Mavic Pro Platinum does not come at the cost of additional weight or bulk. In fact, DJI has made other improvements that make the Mavic Pro Platinum even more convenient to use.

One of the most important is the reduction in noise produced while flying. The new Mavic Pro Platinum is 60% quieter than the original Mavic Pro. This has been achieved by changing some of the components used in manufacturing the drone, and the propellers have also been redesigned to make them quieter and more efficient. Good news for existing owners of a Mavic Pro is that the Platinum propellers can be retrofitted to the older model, allowing for DJI customers to enjoy some of the noise reduction benefits.

The Mavic line of UAVs has completely changed the drone market since DJI introduced the first model. These foldable drones are compact and lightweight, and relatively affordable compared to some of the larger DJI models. They lead the way in stability and ease of use, and consumers will be excited for this iterative but still significant update to the Mavic line.

The Phantom 4 is Now Available in Obsidian

The Phantom 4 Pro is one of the most popular quadcopters on the market for professional use. This model is widely used by aerial photographers, as well as hobbyists and even surveyors and engineers. The Phantom 4 Pro uses a quality 1” 20MP CMOS sensor on the camera, which allows for high resolution stills and 4k Resolution video recording at 60fps.

The sensors used in the Phantom 4 Pro are highly advanced and allow for obstacle avoidance in all directions, as well as autonomous flight that allows for safety and recovery, even if communication is lost with the operator.

Although DJI hasn’t revealed a completely new model of the Phantom 4 Pro, they have announced a new colour. The UAV will now be available in an obsidian variant, which is a matte-grey finished made using lightweight magnesium. Aesthetically it’s a significant improvement over the standard white Phantom 4 Pro, and while nobody will be rushing out to replace their existing Phantom 4 Pro with the new colour, it will likely turn out to be a bestseller with new buyers.

Ever since the initial launch of the DJI Phantom 4 Pro quadcopter, it has become a favourite of professional photographers. Owner testimonials have been extremely positive, and from online reviews, more than 80% of all customers give the Phantom 4 Pro a perfect review score.

DJI Has Also Launched the New Sphere Photography Mode

In addition to an updated Mavic and a new colour for the Phantom 4, DJI have also announced their new sphere photography mode. Sphere was showcased with the entry-level Spark handheld drone, one of the smallest photography UAVs that is currently available.

Sphere mode is a computer controlled 360-degree panoramic mode that will allow DJI Spark drone operators to create immersive aerial shots that would be extremely difficult to make with manual control and stitching using a photo manipulation program. Sphere will be rolled out to Spark owners with an update to the UAV firmware, as well as the DJI GO 4 smartphone application. Users will be able to share their Sphere shots directly to social media platforms like Facebook.

Sphere is not the only update to come to the Spark UAV. Firmware updates have also introduced hand gesture controls, making the Spark the very first consumer drone to be controlled entirely by hand gestures. These gestures can be used to direct the drone, and can also be used to take images and start recording video.

Other improvements to the Spark firmware will include integration with DJI Goggles, improved stability for take-off and landing, better control accuracy, a new 180-degree photo mode, improve photo resolution, and better video controls to create cinematic style films using a Spark UAV.
